I just finished the book, too, and I liked it. I liked how the girls got to act just like Ruby Redford and be detectives. Detective stories are my favorite type of stories.
I'm glad that Clarise and Betty made up their fight and were able to keep being friends. It seems like Betty felt bad that Clarise had to work on her own when Betty was in Russia. Also, maybe she was a bit jealous that Clarise was working with Kurt on the Ruby Redford project for the contest. Sometimes friends get jealous when one friend spends time with someone else.
I think what I liked best about the book, though, was reading it with you. It's fun to read a book with someone else, don't you think?
OK. On to our next book! [Which one should we read next?]

I'm glad you are almost finished the book; I've enjoyed reading it with you. I checked to see if there are any other Clarise Bean books. There are a LOT!

There's one at the Brookline Library right now. When you finish that one, we can order another one.
I'll try to catch up with the reading tonight. Maybe this would be a good book to talk about when you go on the show with Michaela.

Big question so far
The big question for me so far (I'm up to chapter 5, so you're probably a little ahead) is, "What happened to Betty Moody?"
Why wasn't she in school on the big day when Clarise had to sign up for the book project? And why doesn't her teacher want her to do the report on Ruby Redford? Ruby Redford seems like the PERFECT book topic for Clarise and Betty to report on. Why doesn't the teacher want them to do the report on Ruby Redford?
I'm liking the book so far; how about you? I like how it's written as if Clarise is talking. That's my favorite way for an author to write a book. The pictures are good, too.
The story I'm writing about Candice McCann is kind of like this story, too. That's what I'm trying to do, to. Maybe you could write one, too, if you wanted to.

chapter 3
I just finished reading chapter 3. I wonder who put the alligators in the potties. It doesn't seem like something that kids could do.
Here's a picture of a bull rider, just like on the boy's wall:
It's kind of funny that the police officer comes from Boston, don't you think?
What do you think is going to happen to Dana? He'll be pretty mad that he has a broken nose.

Opening post

Emily:
Here's a new space for us to share. Like you, I've now read the first two chapters of Hoot, so I want to write about that.
When I start a new book, I often make a list of the main characters so I can remember them. So far, the main characters are:
Roy Eberhardt--the main character so far. He's in 7th or 8th grade, I think
Dana Matherson--a bully who picks on Roy on the bus
Officer Delinko--the police officer we met in chapter 1.
Curly Branitt--the man who runs the construction site where the owls live in holes. This seems important since the book is called "hoot." The title must have something to do with these owls.
Garnett--a friend Roy makes at school
Some questions I wonder about so far:
1. Who is the barefooted boy who runs when the bus comes?
2. Why doesn't the tall girl want Roy to find out about this boy?
3. What's going on at the construction site? Who is taking out the sticks? What will happen to the owls when the builders build on the land where the owls live?
Here's about where in the United States the story takes place, I think: Coconut Grove, Florida
Here's a map of the USA, if you want to see where Florida is--US Map
Please write back about any questions you have about the book so far or any ideas you have. Are you liking the book so far? It's fun reading with you.
